We aim to become an established University of Miami Center. We aim to be a global leader in mindfulness and contemplative practices, spearheading research and training that will improve lives.

Our Mission is to Advance the science of the mind to improve lives.

UMindfulness is a collaborative, campus-wide initiative at the University of Miami that seeks to better understand how the mind shapes our place in the world, our health, our performance, and our overall wellbeing.

UMindfulness Today

UMindfulness was founded in 2010 by Amishi Jha and Scott Rogers, who continue to guide the program as its Directors of Research and of Programs and Training, respectively.

The center brings together cutting-edge technology and expertise from across our prestigious campus – from the College of Arts and Science and School of Law to the Miller School of Medicine and the Frost School of Music.

Our internationally regarded faculty conducts rigorous and groundbreaking research to further the development of life-changing training programs. Our past programs have benefitted students, teachers, athletes, military personnel, and professionals throughout South Florida, and across the country. We also offer a lecture series, workshops, and training programs that invite people to deepen their understanding and practice in areas that matter to them.

By studying the efficacy and influence of contemplative practices and their underlying brain mechanisms, our research innovates ways to increase the effectiveness of contemplative training. Our vision is to engage an even broader community in the science, training, and practice of mindfulness. This vision is outlined in the three pillars set forth below.

Pillars of Success

1. Research
We must continue to seek answers to the most fascinating questions regarding mindfulness and the growing body of scientifically researched wisdom traditions, examining the relationships between brain and body; the effectiveness of training in fueling personal momentum; the scalability and reach of training; and much more.

2. Expanded Programming
UMindfulness will continue to offer evidence-based courses, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). And, we will also develop and implement programs for specific groups – teachers, athletes, medical professionals, first responders, corporate leaders, community organizers, and other influencers. In addition, training opportunities will be provided for specific patient groups such as those with chronic pain, cancer patients, and those with cardiovascular disease risk. Additionally, we will provide training and certification to those interested in becoming instructors.

3. Outreach
We will make the center an international hub, expanding our footprint beyond South Florida by partnering with corporate leaders, non-profits, government agencies, and other organizations and groups that can help us create meaningful connections to new faces and new corners of the world.

The Path Ahead

Our bold vision is for the UMindfulness Center to be a global leader in the science and practice of mindfulness and other forms of contemplative training. As an international and local destination for innovative programming, the Center will be a hub to educate, inspire, and teach ways of using our innate abilities and resources to relieve stress and pain, ease suffering, promote healing, optimize performance, and cultivate well-being. This programming excellence will dovetail with cutting-edge neuroscience research to
advance the science of the mind to improve lives.

The realization of this goal demands funding.

We need your support to:
• Build a core endowment that allows UMindfulness to be recognized as an official University Center
• Support faculty and key academic positions, researchers, instructors
• Engage in scholarship activities
• Secure a dedicated physical space and advanced technology
